“I had a wonderful day learning about wood turning with Bill. He was kind and welcoming, and expertly guided me through making a conducting baton. His workshop is clean, bright, and very well equipped.” EM Music Tuition 2025

“I had an introductory session with Bill as I’m very keen to take on woodturning as a full time hobby. It turns out (pun intended) that it’s not quite as easy as I thought it would be, but Bill is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher and has a great way of relating woodturning techniques to seemingly unrelated topics to help you understand. Bill’s wood shop is the perfect environment to learn and if I had one like this at my home, I’m fairly certain I’d spend more time there than in my actual house! I left the the day with a great little sycamore bowl and even an even greater motivation to buy my own lathe and get turning. I’ll be heading back to Bill’s workshop for an intermediate course once I’ve had a bit more practice at home. A superb course ran by an altogether pleasant chap. Thanks Bill.” Ben 2021

“I spent a most rewarding and educational day with Bill yesterday. I have been turning bowls for a short while and had reached the limit of my self taught skills. Bill was able to show me how to improve upon my technique and produce stunning results. This he did in a friendly and patient way, taking time to explain but not being pedantic. Bill also spent time showing me how to get the best edge on my gouges and chisels which also boosted my confidence. Bills intelligence and engineering background stand him in good stead and he is a natural teacher. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending one of Bill’s courses for anyone at any level who wants to learn a new skill or develop existing skills. A thoroughly enjoyable day and excellent value for money.” Nigel 2021

“Had a great day with Bill. Very accommodating as my mobility isn’t good and my main aim was to ensure I was able to use a lathe sitting down. Very clear instructions, and patient. Great workshop as well, (very envious). Have now made some bowls which got better and better. Thanks Bill.” Paul 2025

“The wood turning course with Bill was Amazing!! As a design teacher it is always good to improve my skill set but also to see how someone else would teach a particular technique or skill. The course was well structured and it is clear from the start that Bill is very skilled and knows his subject. Bill creates a very relaxed and calm environment in which to work and allows students to build on experience through doing, with guidance on how to improve. I decided to make a bowl having already had some time learning to turn a cylindrical shape. I found Bill very understanding of my prior knowledge and the aspects I found more challenging, providing help to improve my overall skill. The day was so enjoyable and I left with a far better understanding of wood turning and for my skill set, how to turn a bowl shape. I would recommend Bill’s course to anyone with a desire to pick wood turning up as a hobby but also for those that have already some experience of wood turning wishing to further their skills. A wonderful day with Bill who clearly is passionate about his work! It’s hard not to be enthusiastic after!!” Ben 2019

“My father has wanted to try wood turning for ages and so I booked a course for the two of us with Bill. We had a super day, he explained everything very well and we came out with a very nice turned pencil or brush pot each, out of mulberry and apple wood which he supplied. Bill was very friendly and helpful and we can thoroughly recommend the experience.” Jonathan 2024

“I hadn’t even seen a lathe up close let alone use one before .. until yesterday! As Bill said.. he has only been wood turning for 35 years and still learning. Nevertheless, I could not have hoped or imagined a more enjoyable introduction into this world. The wood, the grain, the tools, the bevel… Oh! And the sharpener. Really lovely bloke and his shed is a a wood turning Disneyland. Thanks ” Paul 2024

“I had the most fabulous day with Bill. It is a treat to come across someone who is a born teacher. Bill is very welcoming, friendly and above all, very patient. He explains everything in a clear and engaging manner and never made this novice feel inadequate. His workshop and equipment are first class. I cannot recommend Bill enough as an instructor and spending the day with him was a treat. Thank you.” Nicholas 2024

“One to one course. Overall an excellent and informative course with Bill covering many aspects of wood turning- ranging from wood preparation, through to chisel types and sharpening. The usage of the chisels and types of cut on the lathe was particularly informative and Bills approach to the use of the gouges was informative and supportive. Bill demonstrated great patience and skill in assisting myself as a complete beginner and I would recommend the course to anyone who wanted to learn the basics of turning and the safe handing of wood chisels. Many thanks.” Geoff 2024

“I had never done anything like this before but Bill patiently introduced and demonstrated it, always paid attention to safety, and before long left me to learn, feel, and make my own mistakes. He was very friendly and patient and made sure that there was a plan and that I understood why things were done the way they were. It was both exciting and peaceful, and an excellent experience. I’m very pleased with the mill we made. Thoroughly recommend a day out of the normal flow of life with Bill and a piece of wood. Luckily for my family we don’t have a place for a lathe at home…” Ed 2024

“A super day! Bill was really accommodating with dates which made booking so easy! We had a project that we wanted help with, so I messaged Bill and he was really encouraging – he invited us to bring our project along and offered help and advice as we worked on our pieces. Bill advised us on sharpening our chisels and then supported us as we worked. Bill’s workshop is lovely and we felt so welcome. I’d recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about wood turning ? Thanks for an amazing day!” Andrea 2022

“I have book 1 day so far with Bill to learn about wood turning and thoroughly enjoyed it. He is a fabulous teacher and very patient and accommodating to your learning wishes. I wanted to get going on a specific project and Bill therefore shaped the coaching around what I needed to know to successfully achieve my goal. I’d recommend Bill and the course to anyone interested in wood turning and will definitely be going back again to learn a bit more! Thanks Bill.” Gaving 2022

“My 11 year old son and I spent a very enjoyable day with Bill at his well equipped workshop on the Introduction to Woodturning course. I was a bit apprehensive that the course would not be suited to my son but Bill worked really well with him and was very patient as he created a Harry Potter style wand. I turned a shallow bowl to use as a wallet/coin tray and at every stage, Bill explained to us the difference in effect depending on the wood used, the grain, the tools, the lathe speed, etc. I can’t imagine anyone being able to be more informative and helpful than Bill, who seems to do with ease something that I experienced to be rather more challenging. This was a really good introduction and I will use the advice given, hopefully to good effect, in terms of equipment to buy. I strongly suspect, that we will be back with Bill at some point to help us take that next step.” Kevin 2019
